Fishing Reports

Bait Fishing Report - July-15, 2010
The bait fishing has picked up this past week, just in time for the annual
Shogun fishing tournament. The weather man is forecasting a beautiful weekend,
so come on up before the bait fishing season ends August 1st. The top spot
continues to be in 14 to 15 feet of water in McGee Bay. Top baits are the
inflated night crawler, followed by your brighter colors of Gulp and PowerBait.
A few other places the guys have been getting fish is between Alligator Point
and Christmas bay. The fish are holding in 22 to 24 feet of water off of the
point between the two. A couple of Crowley regulars picked up some fish from
shore this week. They were fishing off of the point that separates Big and Little
Hilton. They were fishing on the Big Hilton side which has much deeper water than
the Little Hilton side. They had to work for their fish, but they were all in
the 3 pound class.

Perch Fishing Report - July-15, 2010
The perch are still on their spawning beds in the thick weeds. So, you will want
to work the edges in 12 to 14 feet of water. Most of the fish are coming in from
the area between Sometimes Bay and Sandy Point. The other 2 areas producing
fish are the 395 shoreline of McGee Bay, and Big Hilton. We just picked up some
new jigs for the shop. These are ment to be used with a small bobber 1 to 2 feet
off of the bottom. With these, it will be much easier to fish the small openings
in the weed beds. Just set your depth on the bobber and drop it down to the fish
sitting at the bottom of those small openings. I've had some friends using them
for a while now. When the fish are in the thick stuff, these work really well.

Fly Fishing Report - July-15, 2010
The fly fishing has continued to be very tough. There are more and more fish moving
into McGee Bay, but they seem to be feeding on some very small midges. We are getting
some fish early on the Red Baron Blood midge fished about 12 inches from the bottom.
Then around 9:00 I've been switching over to the larger sizes of our SuperFly Emerger
and Shaft Emerger. I've tried fishing some of the real small stuff without much
success, even the size 22's are too big for the midges the trout are eating. Hopefully,
the larger sized midges will start showing up soon too get these fish going again.

Trolling Report  July 16, 2010
Good news, the browns are starting to hit the lures again. We have had a down spell
with tough fishing for everyone. Nice to have some of the fish cooperating again. The
fish are still out in the deep water. Concentrate on the 30-40 foot water putting lures
at around 25 feet down. Middle of the day try even deeper. Areas to troll around in are
the old “brown alley”, over off the Chalk Bluffs, the deep water off 6 bays, Alligator
Point and the deep channels of the Hiltons. Lures working are the Tasmanians in brown
trout, funky frog, green frog, and most with red and gold. Rapalas in the F7 and F9 sizes
in rainbow, brown trout and purpledescent. You cannot go wrong with most of the bikini
colored Needlefish or the old frog color and as always the Cultivas and MiraShad really
work. I hear that the pink ones work well although not for me. I keep trying the pink
lures without any success. Good luck to all the Shogun participants and get up here to
enjoy some of Calif’s best trout. Remember the prime times are best. (prime time being
the first and last several hrs of the day). Don Meier CPR Guideservice 760 784 152
