Fishing Reports

Perch Fishing Report September 1, 2010
Good news for all you perch trollers, the fishing has been pretty good this past week.
The fish are being caught over by the Chalk Bluffs area about 25 feet down in 45 to 50
feet of water. Trolling with downriggers at 25 feet, or 4 to 5 colors of lead is doing
the trick. The best baits have been the Size-7 Broken Back Rapalas in Chartruse, along
with your smaller crank baits.

Fly Fishing Report September 1, 2010
The fly fishing has continued to be a little on the spotty side. We are still in the same
pattern of a few good days followed by a couple of down days. I spent most of today just
looking around with the fish finder. There are fish in several places up in the North arm.
Way up where the Owens comes out through the weeds has been good, the water is only about
7 to 8 feet deep, so you will need to anchor up in the weeds and fish into the clearings.
Punk Perch and Copper Tigers have been best. A little farther out in 11 to 12 feet of water
has also been producing some fish this week. You will need to meter around a bit until you
find a school of fish. Out in this deeper water, I've been using either a Punk Perch, or a
small Birds Nest as my top fly, with a Shaft or Shaft Emerger on the bottom. I also spotted
some fish over by Leighton Springs in 12 feet of water, but could not get them to bite today.

Trolling Report July 29, 2010
The last day for barbed hooks is Saturday. The fish are still deep and in the
prime times will hit lures. With this full moon I would not hesitate to try in
the middle of the day too. We got a nice 3# male brown last night in the channel
towards the dam across from Beaver Cove. Other areas holding fish are the old brown
alley, the Chalk Bluffs and the deeper channels of the Hiltons. Fish the 35-45 foot
water putting lures from 25-30 feet down. Lures that have worked are the Tasmanians
with red and gold, several yellow winged versions, Rapalas in the F9 and F11 sizes
in Rainbow, Brook Trout and Purpledescent colors and you cannot go wrong with the
Needlefish in frog and the bikini patterns. It is also time to try the Arctic Fox
trolling flies too, use the wiggle disc that they come with as it really gives the
flies extra action. Rig them just as the Needlefish with a swivel around a rod length
from the lure and put either a Carolina Keeper or a bead above the swivel to catch and
algae or weeds moving down the line. This is the start of a great time on the lake with
only our flyfishing buddies to share the lake with (along with the watersport group).
