Crowley Lake Fly Fishing Report 8/29/08
--------------------------------------------
The fly fishing has been a little spotty this past week. On the good days, we
have been getting 40 or 50 fish. The slow days are producing anywhere from 10
to 20 fish. Best spot has been out in McGee Bay in 7 to 10 feet of water.
Today I fished 4 hours with a good friend out in 8 feet of water in Mcgee, we ended
up with 35 fish up to 21 inches. Most, were in the 14 to 15 inch class, with a few
of the larger models thrown into the mix. Best flies today were the blood midge
fished about 6 inches off of the bottom, followed by our grey and black patterns
fished about 12 inches off of the bottom. Some other places where fish have been
showing up is Crooked Creek, back in 8 feet of water. The tubers pulling perch
patterns have been doing better than the midge guys back here. The last spot
worth checking out has been the Green Banks area, here try anywhere from 8 to
12 feet of water. If you would like learn more about midge fishing on Crowley,
give us a call here at the Fish Camp to schedule a trip.

Perch Report
------------
The perch have moved off of their beds, and continue to suspend out over deep water.
The best places have been out in McGee Bay around the SS-relief, the deep water over
by sandy point, and the chalk cliffs area. You will need to slow troll out in 20
to 25 feet of water right now.

7/21/08 Trolling Report
------------------------
Last week was very interesting to say the least. The lake got ugly with algae and weeds
for a couple days and then cleaned up to beautiful water. Last night and the night before
the water looks like we could be in May. Just beautiful clear clean water. Now, I have
good news and bad. Good news is the water is clean, bad news is that the trophy brown bite
has slowed to a standstill. Don’t worry, we will find the fish and report back. Other
good news is that on the last several times on the lake (last week and the weekend just
finished) slams of rainbow, cutthroat, and browns were the norm. The beautiful Crowley 1-2yr
fish are willing to play in a big way. Also, the Shogun Tournament over the weekend was
won by a trolled fish (Rapala), brown over 6#.
Ok, here’s what I would do. The deep water around the bathroom in McGee bay continues to
kick out fish regularly. Some days you can stay right around the bathroom and some days
you need to venture away from it. I would try the pass towards Sandy point in 25-35 feet
of water. The pass from the bathroom back towards the landing is also producing. You need
to put the lures from 20-25 feet deep. Obviously when you find the fish, stay there. The
passes from Sandy Point thru 6 bays should produce too in the same depths. For lures my
first choice will still be the Tazmanian Devils. I like the 13.5 size although the 7 works
too. Gold has been a common color that works on these lures. Also, try the Rapalas in 7
and 9 floaters in the rainbow, black and silver or gold and black. The purpledescent
color also has been working. You also cannot go wrong with needlefish, they will
consistently fill a limit. Gold being a common color for these also. With the clean water
we have right now, make sure your leaders are fluorocarbon, the only drawback with these
leaders is make sure no nicks exist as they will break easily if nicked. Kind of goes
without saying, that flashers and worms are also working, too bad the fight just is not
as fun. But for you meat fishermen, this is maybe the most consistent way to fill a limit.
Remember to release the browns and cutts, keep only as many rainbows as you need and we
will have a great fishery for years to come. This is a year to remember, as the fishing is
and has been epic. Only a few days left for the bait guys, but the most fun time of the
year is still ahead with only our flyfisher friends to share the lake with.
